“It Is Because of What God Did for Me”

When we tell the story of the Four Children at Passover, to the child who does not know how to ask a question we are instructed to say: “It is because of what God did for me when I went free from the land of Mitzrayim.” The enduring lesson here is that God freed each of us – not only our ancestors – from slavery.

Our new song parody of “Both Sides Now” by Joni Mitchell conveys this idea musically:

Now we’re with a festive crowd,

We all recline, our heads unbowed.

We sing “Dayenu” right out loud

When we are gathered here

What’s the lesson we have learned?

It’s more than just a bush that burned

As far as we are all concerned,

The answer’s loud and clear.

(Chorus)

We’ve lived our lives from both sides now

From slave to free and still somehow

It’s God’s great power we recall

We’re here because God saved us all

This song is perfect for a group or solo performance at your Seder. Find the lyric sheet to download and share in our song index or listen to a sample vocal performance. Get your guitar and strum along or turn up the instrumental recording on our website, and enjoy!
